“If we drink enough Maotai, we can solve anything”

The attached is a photo taken perhaps in 1985 when Ted visited my family in Wuhan, China, while I was in Ithaca working for my degree.


In the photo, my father-in-law, Rongchang Zhao, toasted Ted with Maotai, a brand of Chinese liquor.


Allegedly Deng Xiaoping once served it to Kissinger, who remarked, “if we drink enough Maotai, we can solve anything.”
